Hiring a Lawyer Just Got Cheaper: Learn How to Save Money on Your Next Legal Bill

Many middle class Canadians dread the thought of having to retain a lawyer. Whether it’s dealing with a personal injury, buying a home, filing for divorce, or putting financial affairs in order, obtaining affordable legal services has traditionally been a costly endeavor for most people. The most popular billing practices used by lawyers today include charging by the hour, working on a percentage basis, or fixed fee billing for work completed. However, there is a less commonly used legal billing practice that may offer clients the best value for their money through Prepaid Subscription Plans (PSPs).

The PSP is a very interesting business approach not commonly applied in the legal profession but could be the answer to providing greater access to justice without compromising the quality of the services offered.

Similar to an Insurance policy, PSPs charge fixed annual fees in exchange for the option to benefit from affordable legal services should the need arise. It is essentially “Legal Insurance”. One such company called Law Protection Inc. offers three types of PSPs that range in price from $180.00/year to  $420.00/year. This is much less than most people’s annual phone bills.

The Basic Plan offered is priced at $180.00 per year (less than 50 cents/day). It includes unlimited toll free legal guidance (one per matter), as well as highly discounted fixed rate services and/or hourly rates with a network of lawyers across Canada, which has over 350 law firms and 750 lawyers on contract to provide such services.

The Premium Plan costs $240.00 per year (less than 70 cents/day) and includes services such as unlimited toll free legal guidance, two free telephone calls to a third party (per matter), and two free legal letters to a third party (per matter) not to mention highly discounted fixed rate services and/or hourly rates with a network of lawyers across Canada, which has over 350 law firms and 750 lawyers on contract to provide such services

The most expensive plan offered is the Business Plan. This costs $420.00 per year (or $1.15/day) and includes unlimited toll free legal guidance (per matter), four free telephone calls to a third party (one per matter), and four free legal letters to a third party (per matter) not to mention highly discounted fixed rate services and/or hourly rates with a network of lawyers across Canada, comprising over 350 law firms and 750 lawyers working on contract to provide both business and personal services.

The lawyers working within this network  can afford to offer their services at highly discounted rates (being 25% to 60% less than the national average) in exchange for the volume of business the service will provide them with. All of the lawyers are pre-screened in advance and are qualified to practice law in the particular province the client is calling from.

Next time a legal matter creeps up, it may be worth exploring the highly affordable PSP option before spending money you don’t have. For less than a cup of coffee a day, your legal problems could very well be solved. This certainly offers great value in a country where 50% of Canadians turn down professional legal representation because of cost.
